Telling Him Without Saying a Word
Baby scan cufflinks work best when he doesn't see them coming. Ultrasound prints are small, grey and often a little fuzzy, so some preparation goes a long way. Photograph the printout flat, in daylight, tilting it slightly to avoid the glare that shiny thermal paper throws back. If the hospital gave you a digital copy, use that instead, as it will usually be sharper than a photo of a photo. Crop in close to the baby's profile before you upload, cutting out the black borders and the strip of text along the top, because the cufflink face is small and every millimetre counts.
In the preview, zoom until the head and the little curve of the body fill the square. Scan images read best when the baby is large and central; a wide view of the whole screen tends to become an unreadable grey blur at cufflink size. We print from your full-resolution original, so the sharper the file you start with, the better the finished pair.
Adding a Date or a Word to the Scan
Baby scan cufflinks can carry more than the picture alone. Before uploading, add a short line of text to the image with any photo-editing app on your phone. A few ideas that work at this size:
- The due date in bold numerals beneath the baby, so the cufflinks double as a countdown.
- One word, such as "Daddy", "Dad x2", "Grandad" or the name you've chosen, if you're ready to share it.
- "Arriving March" or whichever month it is, for a gentle reveal.
- Twins, with both babies cropped into the one square, which rather makes the point for you.
Keep any lettering short, large and high in contrast: white on the black of the scan works well. Anything longer than a couple of words tends to shrink beyond reading.
